Lahiri's story is kind of like a lot of other storys about people that come from different countries and backgrounds. Some of them dont really know who they are because they are fighting a battle within themselves. Lahiri is fighting a battle within herself because she doesnt know exactly who she is either american or indian. As she gets older she learns more about herself and realizes that it is ok to be both and ends up living a pretty good life. She still has a deep connection with her Indian roots because she is close with her parents still. But she states in the story that she might not have that same connection to her roots as she does now when her parents pass away. To me this was a very good story.
Yes, shifting cultures can be very problematic, with a great deal of tension between the two cultures and between the older ones who are still clinging to the old culture and the younger ones who are trying to cling to the new culture. This is one of the most common themes in American life and literature, as we are a culture made up of immigrants.
